Port Fairy to Halls Gap - and back to Port Fairy.

Dawn over East Beach - Port Fairy

We Arrive on Monday afternoon in Port Fairy to the aftermath of a huge thunderstorm and the end of Australia’s biggest Folk Festival. The power is out and the remnants of a three day party is getting cleared away. It’s obviously a seriously large event if the marquees in the adjacent showgrounds are any indication.

Port Fairy is a quiet seaside town and we spend our time here catching up on our work and schoolwork. We have a lovely grassy spot so we spend an afternoon creating some art outside as the scheduled thundesttorms never eventuated. During our stay here we start receiving some information suggesting the builders of our apartment in Burleigh are about to go bust. They have various projects underway, ours is almost complete so we’re hoping the developer can work with the subcontractors  directly to finish what little is left. We are unsure how this will affect our settlement date and it may leave us in limbo in April.

We snuck out to an Italian restaurant on a balmy night in Port Fairy.

On our last day Ben nips off for a quick flat white at the best coffee shop in town, then we’re all packed and we head for the Grampians for the best ice creams around. We arrive in Halls Gap and its straight to the ice cream store, Ben uses his paywave as he seems to have left his wallet in the van. We meander the main and head for the playground, and every time I look down April seems to have more of the extremely blue ice-cream all over her, it really couldn’t get any worse but then PLOP it lands in the dirt, there’s tears of course, but its soon forgotten as we play on the playground and spot some of the many kangaroo that inhabit the town. You cannot walk a foot without stepping around their droppings, they spend the day lounging in the grass outside the cabins then munch their way around town.

A scenic walk to the Venus Baths

Still searching for the elusive Koala.

Its mid afternoon and we decide to stay the night here instead of boosting West for South Australia. After setting up camp we turn the van inside out looking for Bens credit card (this actually happens a few times a year) but we really can’t find it. He rings the campground but - no dice. This morning he rang the best coffee shop in Port Fairy and the lady was just on her way out the door to the police station with his wallet - looks like we’re heading back to Port Fairy and the best coffee in town.
